Objectives

Good accounting practice can support steady growth of an organisation and serves as a sign of good management behind. A series of workshops are organised with objectives to enable NGO staff who are responsible for accounting / financial issues to strengthen their knowledge in managing NGO finance.

Certificates

1. Certificate in Accounting Practice for NGOs” will be issued by HKCSS Institute to participants who have completed with at least 20 hours of training, inclusive Workshops 1 & 2. Participants can choose other elective courses from Workshops 3 to 5 and/or participate at the “Minimising Organisational Risk – Practice Sharing in Internal Control”.
2. Certificate in Financial Management for Non-financial Professionals in NGOs” will be issued by HKCSS Institute to participants who have completed with at least 20 hours of training. Participants can select their desire workshops from Workshops 1 to 5 and “Minimising Organisational Risk – Practice Sharing in Internal Control”.

Workshop 1:Essential Management Accounting for NGO Accounting Staff (Course Code: 09B-C01)

To provide participants with practical skills of how to master some contemporary managerial accounting topics and to manage and control management systems in their workplace.

  3. Budgeting planning, process and budgetary control in NGO
  4. Divisional performance evaluation through budgeting and key performance indicators
  5. Implementation of management control systems in NGO

Workshop 2: Advanced Accounting Knowledge for NGO Accounting Staff (Course Code: 09B-C02)

Workshop 3:Basic Financial Management for Non-financial Professionals of NGOs(Course Code: 09B-C03)

Contents :

To provide participants with an overview of the financial accounting principles and applications, and to demonstrate an overall picture on how to read and obtain valuable data from an NGO’s financial report. Meanwhile, participants are able to grasp basic corporate financial principles and methodologies, and managerial accounting topics for their daily operations.

  2. Structure of financial statements: income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement
  3. Financial analysis: interpretation and analyzing financial statements

To provide the practical skills and knowledge for participants who want to master the importance of internal control and enterprise risk management excellence and to develop and implement such policies and procedures in their organisations. It will focus on relevant topics and the environment in NGO and use SWD’s Lump Sum Grant Manual for illustration.

  1. Driving forces in contributing an excellent corporate governance
  2. The value and function of Internal audit (IA) and internal control (IC) in NGO
  3. Setting up and managing an IA or IC function in NGO
  4. IC - general methodology and work approach
  5. The role of IA or IC in Enterprise Risk Management (ERM)
  6. ERM framework, methodology, and common language to be used
  7. Implementing ERM in practice

Workshop 5:Financial Decision Making for Non-financial Professionals of NGOs (Course Code: 09B-C05)

Ms Lui is a member of CPA Australia and committee member of its Public Sector Committee.  She has over 10 years of senior accounting experience in NGOs and the Public Sector.

Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children (HKSPC)

Having fruitful experiences in handling financial issues from perspective of service centers and organization, Mr Lam is an experienced instructor in many similar training courses/workshops for social work professionals. With background in both commercial and NGOs, Mr Lam can provide insights to share with participants. He is currently Deputy Director - Finance & General Administration of Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children and has over 25 years of experience in financial management both in commercial and NGO sectors. He currently holds the qualifications of Certified Public Accountant, Chartered Management Accountant and Certified Practicing Accountant (Australia).

Ms Lee is a Certified Public Accountant with over 10 years of experience in management and financial accounting both in commercial and NGO sectors.  With her profound knowledge of accounting and finance, along with practical real life examples, she has ample experience in sharing management systems implementation and conducting internal controls in NGO’s service units.
