Introduction

Internet addiction is increasingly common among school children. This half-day seminar is designed to inspire social workers to tackle the problem using various approaches. Experts from The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care, The Chinese University of Hong Kong will discuss the latest figures and trend, prevention and intervention strategies for Internet addiction.

The seminar will include perspectives from epidemiologist, health psychologist, clinical psychologist, social worker, and social marketer, in order to enable social workers to use different tools to attack this emerging problem.

Guest Speaker

Dr Johnson Lau 劉振康博士
Instructor, The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care
The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Dr Lau has a background in both laboratory science and social science. He received his Master of Philosophy in Chinese Medicine and Master of Social Science in Applied Social Research, and completed PhD in Public Health on the topic of internet addiction among university students in China. He serves as Instructor in the School of Public Health and Primary Care since 2010. His research interests include adolescent health and Internet addiction.

Prof Vincent Tse 謝偉成教授

The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Dr Vincent Tse earned his two Bachelors of Sciences in Biochemistry and Psychology at McMaster University, Canada. With the background in these two disciplines, he pursued his doctoral degree at the King’s College London, United Kingdom. His Ph.D. thesis focused on understanding the social behavioral mechanism of depression. Dr Tse has centered his research focusing on the model of biopsychosocial origin of depression using experimental and non-experimental approaches. He further expands his research interests in the area of schizophrenia, anxiety, and aggression. He has served as ad hoc reviewer of international refereed journals and major grant agencies.

Ms Polly Lam 林碧君女士
Clinical Psychologist

Ms Polly Lam is a clinical psychologist. She graduated from University of Western Sydney (Australia) with a master degree in clinical psychology, and had been practicing in psychiatric clinic, hospital and counseling centre in Sydney. She specialized in treatment for substance abuse, gambling addiction, and personality disorder. She was the coordinator of the Resilience Centre-Problem Gambling Prevention and Treatment Centre, which is established by Macau SAR government as the official gambling treatment centre. Recently she is designing and implementing drug and internet addiction prevention programs/seminars for NGOs in Hong Kong.

Mr Kennedy Ng 吳國雄先生

Mr Kennedy Ng is a trained social worker specialized in youth and family services. He graduated from the program of MSocSc (in Social Work) from the Dept. of Social Work, CUHK. He concentrate on preventive, developmental, and remedial programs, including the Understanding Adolescent Project (UAP), Youth-Pre-Employment-Program, PATHS, Youth Mental Health Program, and wilderness & experiential based adventure counseling groups for substance abusers. He is a Volunteer of Breakthrough Ltd. and Training Consultant to a number of mental health and post-disaster rehabilitation projects in Sichuan, China.

Ms Hsu Siu Man 徐小曼女士
Supervisor, Youth Wellness Centre, The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups

Ms Hsu Siu Man is a registered social worker and the Supervisor of the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups. She graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University with a Social Work degree and obtained a master degree in Counselling from City University of Hong Kong. Since the establishment of HKFYG Youth Wellness Centre in 2011, she focused on carrying out preventive and treatment programmes to young people with addictive behavior, including internet addiction. Extensive training workshops were also delivered to teachers, parents and other helping professionals in the community.

Prof Joseph Lau 劉德輝教授
Professor, The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Prof Joseph Lau holds the positions of Associate Director of the School of Public Health and Primary Care of the CUHK, Head of the Division of Health Improvement, Director of the Centre for Health Behaviours Research and co-Director of the Master Programme on Health Education. He works extensive in research, teaching and consultations on reducing risk behaviors and promoting preventive behaviours and was one of the developers of the Understanding the Adolescent Project. He serves as the Assistant Editor of the international Addiction journal, and provides consultancy to international organizations and Center for Disease Control and Prevention in China.
