Relieving insomnia among older people: the effects of cognitive-behavioral therapy

Dr Yu is currently the Deputy Programme Director of the CADENZA Training Programme. Her major research interest is to promote quality of life and healthy ageing in older people with particular focus on insomnia, oral health, nutrition, mental wellness and symptom management. She also investigates effective disease management model and patient empowerment programme for chronic illnesses.

System approach: Pain management for older persons living in nursing homes
Dr Mimi Tse

Dr Tse teaches nurses in undergraduate and postgraduate level. She is the programme leader for Master of Science in Nursing. Her research interests include health promotion and interventional strategies to enhance quality of living and quality of life for older persons, healthy ageing, elderly safety, long-term care, pain management and E-learning and online learning. Dr Tse has published articles and taken consultancy projects along her research areas.

Bereavement care for widowed older persons

Dr Chow is a registered social worker with the specialization in bereavement counseling. She is the former Centre Director and foundermof the first community-based bereavement counseling centre in Hong Kong. She received the Association for Death Education and Counseling 2005 Cross-Cultural Award in April 2005.

Dr Leung is Assistant Professor of School of Nursing of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), Centre Manager of the Centre for Health Promotion of HKU and Council member of Hong Kong Association of Gerontology. She is an experienced health educator and active researcher in educational gerontology, developing health promotion interventions for patients with low health literacy and scales for measuring health literacy in the Chinese population.

Dr Mak is Research Assistant Professor working for the CADENZA Project. She received her PhD in Psychology from HKU. In the Project, she has involved in various research projects, including a focus group study on elderly service needs, an elderly misconception survey, an end-of-life care study, a survey on healthcare prioritization, an art therapy project for elderly people with dementia, an elderly employment study, and a project on world cities audit.

Dr Ng’s key research area is the application of Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese philosophies in mental health work. Current research projects include operationalization of stagnation (a concept from traditional Chinese medicine) as a mental health construct, illness coping strategies in irritable bowel syndrome, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Narrative therapy: Reconstructing stroke survivors and caregivers’ meaning and purpose in life
Dr Esther Chow

Esther O W Chow is a registered social worker, a social work educator with extensive clinical experiences in working with older adults in community health context. She received her MSW, and PhD from Faculty of Social Sciences, The University of Hong Kong, and graduate diploma in Narrative therapy from Dulwich Centre, Australia. Dr Chow has extensive research experiences in outcome studies, particularly in partnership with not-for-profit organizations on the effectiveness of various practice-intervention models. Her current research interests include practice of narrative therapy, self-help and mutual-aid, life wisdom, social support and coping, resilience and spirituality. She is currently involved in a 3-year project funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.

Applications of assistive technology for older adults
Ir Dr Eric Tam

Ir Dr Tam is the Director of the Jockey Club Rehabilitation Engineering Centre. His research interests included applications of assistive technologies in learning and communication; special seating and postural support; wheeled mobility, wheelchair transportation and wheelchair testing. Ir Dr Tam also investigates the etiology of pressure ulcer and the use of technology for memory enhancement in aging.

Dr Elsie Yan is an assistant professor at the Department of Social Work and Social Administration, The University of Hong Kong. She received her PhD in Psychology from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research interests include elder abuse, elder sexuality, dementia care, caregivers’ stress, and volunteerism. Her publications appeared in International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Death Studies, etc.

Continence management of residents in long-term care
Dr Claudia Lai

Dr Claudia Lai is Professor in the School of Nursing at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Her program of research focuses on various aspects of long-term care and, in particular, on the care of people suffering from dementia. She has won a number of awards for her work on dementia care. She is an honorary nursing advisor to many voluntary service agencies in Hong Kong.
