Objective

To enable non-finance background managers of social service to acquire the concept and methodology of output costing with a view to achieving better understanding of the cost structure of services and strengthening their capability to:

  1. Cost service outputs
  2. Analyze cost information
  3. Identify areas for improvement, and make business/operational decisions, such as
    • Redesigning services or processes to improve efficiency
    • Changing service mix or delivery mode
    • Improving service cost and performance
    • Formulating service and pricing strategy

  • Understanding basic accounting and cost management
  • Practising the preparation of financial statements for services
  • Introducing output costing, its application for social service, the methodology, key steps and tools
  • Sharing real life examples of applying output costing in agencies
  • Using real life example to practise analysis on output costing information

Mr John Ng 吳國輝先生

Mr John Ng has extensive experience in strategic management, organization design, HR and financial management, training and development.  Previously, he was a consulting director of PricewaterhouseCoopers.  He has worked with over 40 NGOs to review corporate governance and agency policies, develop organization structure, design salary structure, and improve HR and financial management.  He has also conducted holistic leadership training programs for a number of social service agencies.  He has developed various management models specific for the sector, including the output costing methodology that has been implemented in around 20 agencies.  He is a Chartered Management Accountant.

New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association

Ms Sania Yau, MSW, a Registered Social Worker, is the Chief Executive Officer of New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association. She leads a team of over 850 staff serving 12,000 persons in recovery from mental illness and their families/carers annually through 33 service units rendering recovery-oriented services spanning from residential, vocational and community mental health services.  To provide job training and employment for people in recovery of mental illness, the Association has been operating social enterprises since 1994 and the developed 19 social enterprises including Teresa New Life Coffee Shop, café330, farmfresh330, rwb330 and ecotour330, etc. To promote mental health in the community, the Association launches various community mental health promotion and prevention projects for the general public. In addition, it operates the New Life Institute of Psychiatric Rehabilitation to provide specialized training for mental health professionals.
