Introduction

Ecological change of the poles and the abnormal climatic changes have demonstrated that the eco system is deteriorating by the continuous destruction caused by human beings. Acute rescue actions are called upon. What kind of actions could NGOs take in responding to environmental protection?

Apart from analyzing the hazards of environmental changes and the urgencies in promoting green actions, guest speakerswill share their views on  energy saving efficiency, returns on rooftop greening and the effectiveness in partnering with corporations to promote environmental protection in the community.

You and the Ecological Change of the Poles

Dr Rebecca Lee Lok Sze MH
Founder of Polar Museum Foundation

In 1985, Dr Lee joined the Chinese Antarctic Exploration Team and worked at the Great Wall station. She was the first female to set foot on three poles (Arctic, Antarctic and Mount Everest Region). In her career, Dr Lee has dedicated herself to protecting the environment and polar exploration. She has published many books and photographs about the polar world.

Promoting Environmental Protection through Partnership

Ms Mimi Yeung  
General Manager (Public Affairs), Hongkong Electric Holdings Ltd.

Mimi Yeung has extensive experience in journalism and corporate communication. At HK Electric, she has initiated various environmental education and community programmes, including the three-year Green Lamma Green project aimed at enhancing the greenery and ecological value of Lamma Island as well as promoting it sustainable development.

Mr Rico Wong
Acting Chief Executive of The Conservancy Association

Rico Wong is currently the Acting Chief Executive of the Conservancy Association.  With the background of Environmental Management, he has conducted many environmental audits and facilitated environmental management system.  Since 1995, Rico has been devoting himself in environmental education program in various levels of school, public and private housing estates and many corporations. Mr. Wong always gives training to the primary and secondary school teachers, eco-tour guide and student environmental protection ambassadors on various environmental issues.

Ms Miranda Szeto  
Head of Public Affairs, Swire Properties

Miranda Szeto joined Swire Properties in 1999, and is currently the Head of Public Affairs.  She devotes herself to environmental protection and education, being a member of Swire Properties’ EHS Steering Committee and School Manager of Taikoo Primary School.

Ms Maggie Shek
Registered Social Worker
Hong Kong Children & Youth Services (HKCYS)

Maggie Shek joined Hong Kong Children & Youth Services in 1995 as a school social worker. Now she focuses on Small Group Home Service. Since 2006, HKCYS has been partnering with Swire Properties Community Ambassador to launch the “Green Ambassador”programme with the aim to advance the knowledge on environmental protection of children and encourage them to share with others.

Teresa is the founding member of Green Living Education Foundation. The Foundation aspires and commits itself to the education and promotion of “green living ” - conducting one’s life according to the laws of Nature - in Hong Kong. Club O was established under the Foundation in 2004 and is offering various green living educational activities; publishing green newsletters; and running Club O Choice offering organic and healthy food, and other green daily supplies.

Being the Deputy Centre Manager of the Hong Chi Pinehill Integrated Vocational Training Centre, Miss Li has been coordinating various green projects aim at creating placement and employment opportunities for trainees with intellectual disabilities since 2006. Significant projects include the Roof Greening Competition for Primary & Secondary Schools in Hong Kong, roof garden maintenance for the HSBC Mongkok Branch and “Mission Green Top” project for Sino Group at its Skyline Tower.

Ms Luk, 1996 graduate of Bachelor of Social Work, is now Service Director of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council for over 20 years. She is an experienced Social Worker and in-charge of the service units.

Promoting Eco-efficiency in NGOs through Environment and Conservation Fund

Ms Betty Cheung
Principal Environmental Protection Officer
Community Relations Unit, Environmental Protection Department

Prior to joining the Unit in late 2007, Ms Cheung worked on different environmental initiatives including the development of environmental legislation, enforcement of pollution control legislation and providing environmental compliance assistance to trades and industries.

Ms Cheung is committed to raising environmental awareness of the community through various environmental education programmes. Amongst other initiatives, she is currently responsible for administering the Environment and Conservation Fund, which aims to provide funding support for educational, research, technology demonstration and other projects/activities in relation to environmental and conservation matters.
