Implications of Global Warming to the Green Actions of NGOs

Drastic climate changes and deteriorating ecology in the Poles have been results of destructive human activities in the past. In echoing the issue, an Environmental Protection Forum for NGOs 2009 on the topic “Implications of Global Warming to the Green Actions of NGOs” was organised on 12 June 2009. The sharings among guest speakers inspired us to start green living in different levels, individual, organisation operation, and cross-sectoral partnership collaboration, etc. Over 120 representatives from the social service sector joined this forum.

Dr. Rebecca Lee MH, Founder of Polar Museum Foundation as one of the keynote speakers to share her insightful experiences and explorations in the past two decades at the two Poles, Tibetan Plateau, and the desert area. She raised concerns about global warming, environmental pollution, lumbering etc., which brought disastrous impacts, such as climate change, natural disaster, discordant ecosystem and threatening bacteria, to the earth and human beings. She reiterated that these harmful effects were approaching to our daily lives and we should make contributions to environmental protection as soon as possible. Another guest speaker, Mrs. Teresa Lam Yu Lai Ling, Vice Chair of Green Living Education Foundation, inspired us on green living in individual level and the importance with an all-rounded balance life.

Besides, we also invited Ms. Mimi Yeung, General Manager (Public Affairs) of Hong Kong Electric Holdings Ltd.,Mr. Rico Wong, Acting Chief Executive of the Conservancy Association, Ms. Miranda Szeto, Head of Public Affairs of Swire Properties and Ms. Maggie Shek, Registered Social Worker of Hong Kong Children & Youth Services, as our guest speakers. They encouraged the co-operations between NGOs and corporations to include green elements in community activities. On the other hand, sharing from NGO’s perspectives, Ms. Nicole P.M. Li, Deputy Centre Manager of Hong Chi Pinehill Integrated Vocational Training Centre and Ms. Melissa Luk, Service Director of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council, shared their winning proposals on environmental protection, including the advantages and considerations when setting up a roof gardening, and the methods and procedures required in implementing energy saving in hostels etc.

To encourage active participation of energy saving among NGOs, a “Pilot Tripartite Scheme on Energy Saving” of the Environment and Conservation Fund, including encouraging measures and suggestions on energy saving, was introduced by Ms. Betty Cheung, Principal Environmental Protection Officer of Community Relations Unit from Environmental Protection Department.

floor Paying concerns on environmental protection, over 100 participants joined the forum, including representatives from the social welfare sector, business sector, and college students.
